A Glossary of Sarong Terms:

A Glossary of Sarong Terms:

  • Baliku sarong: Baliku means "My Bali" and originates on the island of Bali where art is part of the natural rhythm of life and love.  Our baliku sarongs are made with batik designs imparting a lovely handmade expression.

  • Bandeau sarong bathing suit: Bandeau sarong bathing suits are a type of ready-made skirted swimwear.  However there are several fun ways to tie your favorite sarong into a bathing suit, including a one piece, two piece and men’s "trunks".

  • Batik sarong: Batik is a cloth treatment which traditionally uses a manual wax-resist dyeing technique. Due to advances in the textile industry, the term has been extended to include fabrics which incorporate traditional batik patterns even if they are not produced using the wax-resist dyeing techniques. Usually an original would have been hand-made using the wax-resist and hand-dyeing techniques, then the end result would be copied and set up to mechanically reproduce.  Batik has a nice earthy exotic feel to the design.

  • Beaded sarong:  Beaded sarongs may have a design that incorporates beads sewn onto the design or may have beads hanging from the fringe.  They really dress up a sarong, a must have for the sarong party girl.

  • Half sarong:  Half Sarong, Mini Sarong or Short Sarong are all different names for the same item.  They measure approximately 66" x 22", see item description.  A half sarong can be used as a mini wrap skirt, a scarf, a shawl, a sash or even a bandeau (if you're small enough on top). Half sarongs are great for young girls who don't need all the fabric of a full sarong.  They are really cute on toddlers, do a mommy and me look!

  • Kanga:  Kanga is the African word for sarong.

  • Pareo:  Pareo is the Hawaiian word for sarong.

  • Pertama Sarong:  A pertama sarong is a large premium heavyweight traditional sarong that is likely to be hand made.

  • Plus Size Sarong:  Women's plus sized sarongs are extra long.  They normally run about 30 inches longer than the standard length sarong.  They may be about 92 inches to 100 inches long by the usual approximately 44 inches. They normally fit XL to 3XL sizes.  These are a blessing to bigger gal’s that want normal coverage, and are also great for the more petite figure that wants to wrap into more detailed styles.

  • Sarong Bathing Suit:  The sarong bathing suit is just a bathing suit created by creatively folding and tying on your sarong or sarongs. Look for ideas on this coming soon to Turtle Island Sarong.

  • Sarong Cover-up:  Sarongs are great swimsuit cover up for when you need to be a little more modest or want some protection from the mid-day sun.

  • Sarong Dress:  A sarong worn as a dress, many versions have been thought up, have fun with it.

  • Sarong Pants:  Wrap around tie on pants are known as sarong pants. As to tying a couple of sarongs in a fashion that appears to be pants…well this may be mythical.  If I come across a method I will share, if you do, please contact me through this site.

  • Sarong Skirt:  Simply a sarong tied in any of several skirt styles.

  • Standard Sarong:  The standard size sarong is usual approximately 66 inches by 44 inches.  By comparison; half sarongs are 66 inches by 22 inches and plus size sarongs are about 96 inches by 44 inches.

  • Wedding Sarong:  Any sarong worn as a wedding dress, usually solid white is chosen.  This is popular for the tropical or beach themed wedding.
